Intel's Class Processors to Accelerate Data Center Transactions

April 15, 2009
Intel reportedly says its new enterprise class processors can adjust themselves to specified energy usage levels, and speed data center transactions and customer database queries.

The new processors, led by Xeon processor 5500 series from Intel (News - Alert) – a company that deals in silicon innovation, develops technologies, products and initiatives to continually advance how people work and live – can be used by researchers and firms that use supercomputers as their foundation for research to reap great benefits along with reduced electricity costs.

According to Intel, technologies such as the Intel Turbo Boost Technology, Intel Hyper-Threading Technology, integrated power gates, and Next-Generation Intel Virtualization Technology all were enhanced through extended page tables and are incorporated into the Xeon processor 5500 series. These technologies make the processors adapt themselves to the conditions of various workloads.

“The Intel Xeon processor 5500 series is the foundation for the next decade of innovation,” said Patrick Gelsinger, senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s Digital Enterprise Group. “These chips showcase groundbreaking advances in performance, virtualization and workload management, which will create opportunities to solve the world’s most complex challenges and push the limits of science and technology.”

The Intel Xeon processor 5500 series-based platforms come with triple the memory bandwidth of previous server processors making them capable of supporting workloads that require huge processing power.

Intel claims that Xeon processors can also help the upcoming transformation for the Internet’s infrastructure. The high-tech industry has rallied around a goal to run applications from optimized processors and computing hardware that is available on-demand and scalable to the masses. This process is termed as Cloud Computing and can flourish with the help of Xeon 5500 series’ adaptability, capability and intelligence features.

Officials at the company say that they will also assist users who have decided to upgrade their older server processors to the new Xeon 5500 series. Intel has also unveiled L5518 and L5508 version of Xeon targeted at the communications market segments. It also released the Intel 82599 10 Gigabit Ethernet Controller, featuring advanced virtualization technology and unified networking support for enhancing network I/O performance in virtualized data centers.
