BI Survey 10 Examines the Success Rate of Mobile BI Products

October 17, 2011

Now in its tenth year of publication, The BI Survey is an annual report based on the world's largest vendor-independent survey of Business Intelligence and Performance Management users. In the latest report, BI Survey 10, published by BARC, new light is thrown on the extent to which mobile BI products are successful and why these are selected by real-world organizations.

The BI Survey 10 attracted nearly 3000 responses and this year’s report analyzed a record twenty-six products from many leading vendors.

"With all the buzz around mobile BI at the moment, I expect that many people will be surprised that it has such a low adoption rate,” said Barney Finucane, lead author of The BI Survey 10, in a press release.

According to the BI Survey 10 report, in spite of the hype surrounding mobile BI, only eight percent of companies using BI software are currently accessing reports on mobile devices.

Finucane gives two major reasons that could well be factors that explain this low mobile adoption rate. Most BI consumers are deskbound, meaning that they don't need to resort to using mobile devices to access mobile BI reports.

In the case of executives, who are always on the move, they are so hard pressed for time that they can't access mobile BI reports but are given readymade information by someone else.

However, even with all this, analysts regard eight percent as a low figure. They take heart from the fact that 22 percent of those surveyed indicated that they planned to implement mobile BI sometime in the near future while a further 27 percent evinced a keen desire to implement this technology in the long run.

According to the report, company politics took the lead and was cited as a major deterrent by 20 percent of BI buyers with poor data quality and administrative problems also being quoted as issues.

The report also considered those who already had a BI in place. Those buyers that conducted a multi-product evaluation realized more benefits than buyers who had evaluated no product or just a single BI.

A unique approach that enhances The BI Survey 10 is the introduction of a new powerful, interactive online tool, The BI Survey Analyzer. It gives users the flexibility to perform their own custom analysis of the Survey data, filter the data and compare BI products across numerous criteria.
