Alfresco Activiti Makes Open Source Rookies of the Year List

January 19, 2011

Alfresco Software, a company know for open source enterprise content management, has announced that its Activiti Business Process Management (BPM) Platform open source project has been named an Open Source Rookie of 2010 by Black Duck Software (News - Alert).

The Activiti project works as an Apache-licensed open source BPM platform designed from a blank slate to implement the new BPMN 2.0 standard from the Object Management Group (OMG), and to support new technology challenges such as interoperability and the Cloud. Activiti was built from the ground up to be a lightweight, embeddable BPM engine, but also designed to operate in scalable Cloud environments.

"This Alfresco sponsored project has proven to be a disruptor in the BPM landscape and we are thrilled to gain additional industry validation by being recognized as a leading open source project by Black Duck Software," said Tom Baeyens, Chief Architect, BPM at Alfresco.

Baeyens said that the Activiti’s speedy BPMN 2 process engine that runs in any Java application, on a server, on a cluster or in the cloud, the Alfresco project has become the de facto standard implementation for BPM for business people, developers and system administrators.

It is said that, Black Duck Software, a global provider of products and services, worked from a list of thousands of new projects launched in 2010. Black Duck even evaluated a project's popularity using a weighted scoring system that awards points for commit activity within a project, the number of developers involved, and the number of web sites linked to the project. After auditing its findings and normalizing scores, Black Duck determined the top 10 Rookie projects.

Tim Yeaton, President & CEO of Black Duck Software said, “As one of the most established open source software vendors on the market today, Alfresco continues to lead the evolving open source landscape through its unique collaboration and innovation around new projects, which the 2010 Rookies analysis demonstrates.”

He said that each Rookies of the Year project, including Alfresco’s Activiti, demonstrates the expanding use of community-driven open source development, and forward thinking by developers and the larger open source community.
