According to Jonathan Collins, the principal analyst at ABI Research, “RFID IT asset tracking is starting to gain momentum in data centers. Managing and auditing this equipment is a serious pain point for IT departments, and automating those applications with RFID can drive clear ROI. The environment also suits RFID: the density of valuable equipment within a restricted area limits the cost and increases the efficiency of an RFID deployment. Once RFID is deployed in the data center there is a base for RFID tagging to extend further within IT asset management across an organization’s IT infrastructure.” The market intelligence and analysis provided by ABI Research provides a unique view of the emerging technology markets.
Since IT assets are key infrastructure for modern businesses, IT managers have to ensure that the equipment is well documented, traceable and secure. To ensure this, detailed and regular auditing of IT assets is a must. With RFID, quicker, detailed and accurate day-to-day management of these important operational assets is possible.
IT asset tracking, a part of the RFID asset tracking market, is expected to grow and take around 10% stake by the end of the year 2013. Both passive and active RFID offerings will be used. RFID deployments may consist of a mix of both technologies as well. With the improvement of passive UHF capabilities and the low equipment costs of the technology, the passive offering is expected to lead in shipment volumes as well as revenues.
The vendors and system integrators of RFID are offering products that range from specialized tags and software to systems design and integration. IT equipment manufacturers have also started offering RFID tagging as a part of their product specification.
